LEARN MORE

P.J. Ahern Home

The Burdsal Company based its Classical Revival architecture for the Ahern home, which was built in 1903 on Laurel Street and designed by Mr. and Mrs. Ahern, on a floor plan drawn up by them. The main hall, parlor, music room, library, kitchen, dining room, powder room, and butler's pantry is on the first floor. In 1918, four bedrooms (two with their own bathrooms), two baths (one with its own shower), a nursery room, and a sleeping porch were built on the second floor. During the summer months, all six children slept on the veranda outside.

The house's original gas and electric chandeliers still glow, as do electric sconces and gas in the parlor and library. The woodwork was never painted, and Mrs. Ahern personally supervised the cleaning of all woodwork once a year. There are six gas fireplaces in the house, four on the first floor and two on the second; each has a distinctive mantel design with Italian tile in various hues.

The Texarkana Museums System assisted the Ahern family in having their home placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The house was saved and plans were made to turn it into a living history museum thanks to Eleanor Horrigan, the youngest daughter of P. J. and Mary O. Ahern. This ambition became a reality in July 2011, with the purchase of the historic property by the Texarkana Museums System, which was eager to have its first property on the Arkansas side of Texarkana-Shreveport.

Every month, the Ahern Home in Texarkana, Arkansas is the site of exhibits and cultural events - usually on the fourth Saturday. The home is also available for rent as a small event venue, wedding location, or meeting space. The House Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday (10 a.m. until 5 p.m.), and Sunday (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.), and is located in the village of Winston, just north of Asheville on US Hwy 21/64, near Bear Creek Park. Every day from 11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4:25 p.m., throughout the year, they offer daily excursions.
